Step into the world of studio photography! In this workshop, you will explore what seems like
By the end of this course, you will have the foundation needed to delve into studio photography. This beginners course will give you the necessary skills and knowledge that will be useful for portraiture, product photography, family, food, and wedding photography. Some of the things you will learn in this workshop are:
- Understanding Light
- Continuous light vs flash
- Metering light
- High key vs low key setups
- Lighting patterns
- Composition
- Using reflectors
- Posing & directing models
Pre-requisites: You must be 100% comfortable in :
- Shooting in MANUAL
- Know the basic relationship between shutter speeds, aperture and ISO settings
- Focusing
- White Balance
- Metering Types
If your current knowledge in photography does not include these pre-requisites, we highly recommend you attend the Beginner and Intermediate Photography Workshops first. If you are not sure where your knowledge is at the moment, dont worry, please feel free to contact us and we will walk you through it with you.
HERE'S WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:
• Lighting Patterns
Learn basic lighting patters, such as butterfly (beauty) lighting, split, side and feathered lighting
• Types of light
Explore the differences between soft and specular light
• Posing and directing models
Learn how to work with models. How to pose, direct, the "do's and don'ts", understanding body types and which poses to choose from.
• Different types of light modifiers
Know the differences between, umbrellas, softboxes, beauty dishes, octas and many more kinds of light modifiers.
• Metering
Learn how to measure light using light meters and why we use the
• Reflectors
The uses for reflectors. why, when, how and which reflector to use.
WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU:
- A DSLR or Mirrorless Camera
- Your portrait lenses (or whichever lenses you have)
- Memory Cards
- A notebook & pen (should you wish to take notes)
- A cleaning kit (if you have one)
- Pictures you wish to share with the class
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT?
This workshop is 7 hours in total.
Do we get hands on?
While this will contain a quick refresher from the Stage 2 workshop as well as a lot of theory, 90% of this workshop will be hands on, with demos, individual and group exercises
What if we get hungry?
Coffee/tea/fresh fruit in the morning will be provided as well as a lunch
What about afterwards?
Once this workshop is done, you will then have access to advanced level studio workshops as well as a mentorship program where you will receive guidance for 2 months following the workshop.

Once this workshop is done, you’re not on your own! This course INCLUDES 1 month of free mentorship where you will be able to contact the instructor directly to share your pictures, get tips, troubleshoot any issues you’re facing. You will ALSO be added to the Guelph Photography Collective, a WhatsApp group for students to share photos, tips, experiences and opportunities and moderated by 2 professional photographers.
